Wednesday’s rain and thunderstorms helped but it’s not enough to eliminate the risk of drought in Iowa.

According to the latest U.S. drought monitor, released Thursday morning by the National Climatic Data Center, Dallas, Guthrie and the southern one-third of Greene Counties are classified as “abnormally dry”, while the northern two-thirds of Greene County is currently experiencing a moderate drought.

Perry, normally receives 5.1 inches of rain in the month of June and only has 2.1 inches so far this month.

Jefferson’s average monthly rainfall total for June is 4.9, so far only 2.4 inches have been recorded.

And Guthrie Center is the worst off in the area so far.  Typically 5.1 inches of rain is received in June and only 1.8 inches has fallen so far, three weeks into the month.

Experts expect the drought to be short term, lasting 6 months or less.
