It’s important to remember our four-legged friends may also need special attention too as they battle the heat.

Abby Benefiel with the Perry Humane Society says pets need st least an ounce of water per pound on a normal day, and that only increases when it’s hot.  She says it may also be a good idea to put some ice cubes in your pet’s dish to help keep the water cooler, or give them pet popsicles by freezing treats in ice cubes and letting them play with and eat them.

Benefiel says if you’re hot your pet probably is too so it’s important to keep an eye on them and make sure they stay cool and hydrated.  Furthermore, as a reminder it is Iowa law that all pets that are confined outside – whether it by a cage, fence or on a chain – must have access to water at all times.  Owners who do not have water available to their pets can be ticketed.
