Despite the extreme heat this week, there doesn’t seem to be any major changes in the drought monitor for the Raccoon River Valley.

According to the latest U.S. drought monitor, released Thursday morning by the National Climatic Data Center, Dallas, Guthrie and the southern one-third of Greene Counties are still classified as “abnormally dry”, while the northern two-thirds of Greene County continues to experience a moderate drought.

Perry, normally receives 5.1 inches of rain in the month of June and only has 2.3 inches so far this month.

Jefferson’s average monthly rainfall total for June is 4.9, so far only 2.7 inches have been recorded.

And in Guthrie Center there is typically 5.1 inches of rain received in June and only 2.9 inches has fallen so far.

The month ends tomorrow and there’s just a 30% chance of rain over the next couple days.

Experts expect the drought to be short term, lasting 6 months or less.
