Some middle and high school students in Guthrie County are going digital this year with implementation of the new 1-to-1 laptop program.

Students in grades 7-12 at both Guthrie Center and Adair-Casey High Schools will receive a new MacBook Pro this fall.

Superintendent Steve Smith held meetings with students and parents recently to explain the guidelines and expectations of the program.  He says the meetings were well attended and everyone has been very receptive to the concept.

After parents sign an accountability contract, students will be issued a computer for in-school use.  It’s also up to the parents to decide whether or not their children can take the computer home as well.

The cost of the program is $40 per junior high student and $60 for high schoolers.  Smith says the district does have insurance to protect against loss, theft or damages, but students will be responsible for a $250 deductible.

Smith says that he expects there is more project based learning going on in this technological world that we now live in.  This program gives the staff a greater opportunity to instruct the students for life and gives the students a greater opportunity to live in the 21st Century.
