While the majority of high school football teams in Iowa begin regular season play on August 24 there were some games played on August 17. Glidden-Ralston narrowly missed upsetting fourth ranked Murray on Friday night in Glidden in non-district action. The Mustangs, the eight-player state runners-up in 2011, prevailed 42-40. Murray all-state quarterback Austin Halls passed for 154 yards and ran for 64 more. G-R had a pair of backs rush for well over 100 yards. Senior Justin Free ran 24 times for 186 yards and two touchdowns while senior Mitchell Lensch had 146 rushing yards on 10  carries and he scored three times. One of Lensch’s TD runs went for 65 yards.

A full slate of games in both eight and 11 player football is set for Friday, August 24 including the annual Battle of the Cowbell as Perry visits the Greene County Rams in Jefferson at 7:30 p.m. That game can be heard on KDLS 1310 AM and KGRA 98.9 FM.
