The 2012-13 high school sports year begins this week for several teams in Greene County. The volleyball team at Paton-Churdan is the first of the squads to open the season when the Rockets visit Burnside on August 21 to face the Eagles of Southeast Webster-Burnside. Hannah Boehmer is in her first year as a teacher and coach at P-C.

The girls and boys from Greene County High School begin their cross-country seasons on Thursday, Aug. 23 on the Iowa State University course in Ames during the Gilbert Invitational. Head coach Kelly Simpson has nearly 30 total runners out for the sport led by senior Jacob Simpson on the boys’ side and sophomore Allison Higgins for the girls. Both just missed qualifying for the Class 2A State meet last fall.

The high school football season starts on Friday, Aug. 24 in Jefferson as the Greene County Rams host the Perry Blue Jays at Linduska Field in a ninth/varsity twin bill. The freshmen teams play at 4:45 p.m. with the varsity contest set for 7:30 p.m. The varsity teams play for a cowbell donated in 1928 by the Rotary Clubs from Jefferson and Perry. The series is one of  the more historic trophy games in all of Iowa high school football.
