Susan and Verlin Kraft

A Guthrie County couple was inducted into the Iowa State Fair 4-H Hall of Fame recently.

Verlin & Susan Kraft were chosen for their more than 30 years of involvement in the Guthrie County 4-H program.  They supported their children who were involved in goats, sheep, horses, turkey and home economics project through 13 years of 4-H.  During this time, they also hosted 4-H exchange students from Colorado and Wisconsin.

Susan served as leader of White Cloverettes and Dodge Dodgers 4-H Clubs throughout the years.   She also found the time to manage the food stand and she received a 5 year award for 4-H leadership.

Verlin and Susan both served on the Guthrie County Extension Council.  Verlin served as assistant sheep superintendent, then as head superintendent until he retired in 2008.  Susan assisted him with doing the paperwork at sheep weigh in before and during the fair for all those years.  Verlin says that after you’ve done this for 30 years, it’s about time to get a little “young blood” in there.

They’re still attending fairs, but now they’re enjoying them as spectators.  In fact, they just returned with their camper from the Iowa State Fair.  Verlin says one of his favorite parts is the livestock shows.  After all these years, Verlin says he guesses he has seniority in prime camping spots and is looking forward to one of them at this year’s Guthrie County Fair.
