Resilient, “The ability to bounce back, recovering from adversity.” That word best described the A-D-M Football team last Friday night. Trailing 7-0 early in the 2nd quarter and having committed three turnovers, the Tigers roared back & outscored the Winterset Huskies 48-7 over the next three quarters to improve their record to 2-0 to start the 2012 season in front of a capacity home opening crowd at A-D-M Stadium.

A-D-M got support from all facets of their team & it’s leaders. Jordan Grove ran for 208 yards & scored 3 touchdowns. QB Kyle Herrick threw for 314 yards & 2 TD’s passes. Tate Jensen electrified the crowd with a dazzling 84 yard TD catch & run to put A-D-M up in the 2nd quarter & the defense forced 6 turnovers & finished the scoring by returning two interceptions for touchdowns.

“We turned the ball over and fell behind early,” said Head Coach Mike Whisner, “But no one dropped their heads, this is a team game & everyone understands their part and if they screw up, they screw up. Just react, recover and reload.”

Winterset scored first, after a Kyle Herrick interception the Huskies scored on their first play from scrimmage when tailback Noah Kaldenberg threw a 51 yard halfback pass to a wide open Trae Gilliland at the 9:39 mark of the first quarter. It was the Winterset’s only lead.

A-D-M turned things around early in the 2nd quarter when Herrick hit a wide open Grant Geoden for a 44 yard TD pass at the 9:06 mark. On their next possession, Jr. Tate Jensen got the Tigers a lead they would never relinquish. Jensen caught Herrick’s underthrown bomb, hand fought a defender 10 yards before cutting back against the grain and picking up a block from his Tight End Anthony Kollenkirk to spring him for the final 15 yards. Last week Jensen had a 95 yard kickoff return to open the season against Dallas-Center Grimes. Later he would return an interception 40 yards for a TD.

The Tigers finished the 1st half up 21-7 after the 1st of three rushing TD’s by Jordan Grove, a 3 yard plunge. Winterset made it a game by scoring on their 1st possesion of the 3rd quarter to cut the lead to 21-14, but the Tigers got two more rushing TD’s from Grove & two defensive touchdowns, interception returns by Jensen & the other by Senior lineman Thomas Light to finish off the Huskies.

“It was a nice team win, the offensive line had a good night, they had some different fronts thrown at them and picked it up nicely as the night went along,” Coach Whisner mentioned, “Kyle Herrick did a nice job of taking what the defense gave have, he matured in leaps and bounds tonight,”. On his defense, Coach Whisner added, “The defense got caught on the opening play but dominated their offensive line the rest of the night.”

With the win the Tigers have now won 14 straight regular season games dating back to October 8th, 2010. They’ll get ready for this week’s Distrct opener at Glenwood. The last time the two teams met was in 2009 with the Rams defeating the Tigers 34-14. Glenwood comes into the game with a record of 1-1.
