It has been a week since a storage tank malfunction caused an oil spill in Jefferson and crews are still cleaning up the mess.

Oil has now been found as far as 15 miles down the North Raccoon River and residents are urged to stay out of the water.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has taken over the investigation.  Last Thursday the Greene County Sheriff’s Office reported the spill to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

Authorities still don’t know how much oil spilled form the 20,000 gallon above ground storage tank at Krieger’s Greenhouse.  The spill happened when the thank valve malfunctioned, causing oil to run down a ravine through a culvert and into the river.

So far more than 800 gallons of oil have been recovered.  Good news is there have been no reports of water supplies being contaminated or fish dying from the incident.

There is also no word yet on if there will be any sort of legal consequences or penalties.
