A very fine cross-country season for Greene County High School senior Jacob Simpson continued on Sept. 20 near Story City at the Roland-Story Norsemen Invitational held at the River Bend Golf Course. Although the Rams were in the lower half of the 11-team field, Simpson finished the five kilometers (3.1 miles) in 17:52.60 and was fifth individually. Jacob Heeren of South Hamilton (Jewell) was the individual champion in 17:38.20. The fifth place finish for Simpson continued a string of high finishes for the senior, who is the son of Greene County head coach Kelly Simpson. A strong summer of training followed a disappointing track season that ended early last spring due to a foot stress fracture. Simpson’s consistently high finishes in races this fall confirms he is healthy and running well.

Bondurant-Farrar won the team title over 10 other squads with 63 points and Woodward Academy was second at 81. Perry was third with 121 points, followed by Nevada 128, South Hamilton 129, and R-S 133, to round out the top six. Greene County was seventh with 158 points.
