The Greene County football team enters the final game of the regular season with many of its preseason goals still intact. The Rams improved to 4-4 overall and 3-2 in Class 2A District 8 with a 54-0 victory at Clarinda Academy on Oct. 12. The Eagles are 0-8 this season and have lost 26 games in a row dating back to the season opener in 2010.

Senior running back Mitchell Madson ran for 149 yards on 18 carries and he scored four touchdowns as the Rams rolled up a 307-95 advantage in total yards. Sophomore Jordan Challen played running back in the second half and the reserve scored TDs from 23 and 19 yards. Senior quarterback Tory Beger had a touchdown on a run of two yards and Beger threw to junior T. J. Lint for a 26-yard scoring strike.

The Greene County defense held CA to negative one yard in the second half. Rene’ Guzman and J.C. Weitl each had six tackles. Reed Ostrander intercepted a pass at the Greene County seven and returned the ball 83 yards to the 10 of CA, and Lint recovered an Eagles’ fumble.

The win was the third straight for the Rams and put them in a position to make things interesting in the race for the second, third, and fourth playoff spots from District 8. Undefeated Kuemper Catholic (Carroll) has the district title wrapped up and OA-BCIG (Ida Grove) is currently second in the district at 4-1 and the Falcons are 5-3 overall. Both the Rams and Shenandoah are 3-2 in district play. If GC upends OA-BCIG at Linduska Field on Oct. 19 both teams would be 4-2 in the district. Shenandoah is currently 3-2 in the district and if the Mustangs win against Red Oak (2-3), a three-way tie for second could occur, which means the Iowa High School Athletic Association would use the 13-point tie breaking rule to determine second, third, and fourth. If GC loses to OA-BCIG the Rams would be fourth in the district if Shenandoah wins because of a 31-12 loss to the Mustangs earlier in the season. If RO wins and GC loses, then GC, RO, and Shenandoah all would be 3-3 with Kuemper first and OA-BCIG second. The tie-breaker would be used to determine which teams are third fourth, and fifth. The first and second place teams from each district open the playoffs on Oct. 24 at home while the third and fourth place teams open on the road. Playoff pairings should be announced late Friday night by the IHSAA.
