The high school football regular season comes to a close on Friday and with just one game remaining on the schedule there are a lot of different scenarios involving the Greene County Rams. Head coach Dean Lansman and his staff have done the math and the coach told Raccoon Valley Radio that Greene County could finish anywhere from second in the district to being left out of the playoffs altogether. The high school football postseason in Iowa begins on Wednesday, Oct. 24.

The Rams host OA-BCIG (Ida Grove) on Oct. 19 to complete both the regular season and the Class 2A District 8 schedule. The Falcons are currently 4-1 in the district and 5-3 overall and they sit in second place behind district champion Kuemper Catholic. The highly rated Knights are 8-0 overall and 5-0 in district play. If Greene County wins vs. OA-BCIG they would secure one of the district’s four playoff berths. If the Rams lose they could still make the playoff field, but that would not be assured, depending on the outcome of the game pitting Shenandoah at Red Oak. The Mustangs are 3-2 in the district and the Tigers are 2-3. The possibility of three-way ties for either second or third place also exist, which means tie-breaking procedures would be implemented by the Iowa High School Athletic Association. Those procedures include the outcomes of head-to-head meetings, followed by a 13-point differential in scores during the regular season. It will all be sorted out around midnight Friday when the IHSAA is expected to release playoff pairings.

Coach Lansman said the best thing his team can do is win on Friday night. Game time is 7 p.m. with coverage on KG98 beginning at 6 p.m.
