Greene County residents and business owners are urged to be cautious when approached by solicitors or people asking for donations.

This week businesses in Jefferson and rural Greene County were approached by a salesman who was asking for donations for the Iowa Police Journal. Each business reported being asked for a different amount of money for a different cause including the journal, the DARE program and booklets that are sent to the schools.

Though the Iowa State Police Association is a legitimate association that publishes a magazine called the Iowa Police Journal and sales people do travel looking for donations, not all solicitors are completely truthful.

Residents should always question anyone asking for donations to find out what exactly they will receive for their money.
