The Greene County wrestling team is practicing this week in preparation for the Jan. 5 Coon Rapids-Bayard Invitational in Coon Rapids. That tournament will be the first action of 2013 for Coach Mark Sawhill’s team. The coach expects his team’s first trip to this tournament to be both challenging and beneficial. Among the teams in the field are South Central Calhoun (Lake City) and Audubon. The Titans edged the Rams 37-34 in a dual meet in Jefferson on the first weekend of the season and the two will be in the same sectional and district tournaments in February. The Wheelers are a highly regarded Class 1A team. Coach Sawhill expects other good teams and individuals in Coon Rapids on Saturday as well. The coach said it won’t be easy to challenge for the team title Saturday, but that also means his wrestlers will see good competition, which is what he feels will prepare the team for the postseason.

The Rams have several individuals having banner seasons including a trio with just one loss each. Junior Dylan Forkner is ranked seventh in Class 2A at 126 lbs. and sports a record of 18 wins and one loss. Junior Jeremy Scheuermann (Shar-min) and senior Aaron Beaman are both 19-1. Scheuermann is at 145 lbs. while Beaman started the season at 285, but is now in the 220 lbs. weight class.
