Greene County is 5-0 in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference dual wrestling meets and alone in first place thanks to a monumental come back on Thursday night in the middle school gym in Jefferson. The Rams trailed Nevada 34-12 with six matches remaining and won all six to pull out a 40-34 victory. The Rally started with freshman Daric Whipple winning 3-1 at 138 lbs., followed by a 12-3 major decision for junior Jeremy Scheuermann (Sharmin) at 145 to make the score 34-19. Senior Ike Eischeid used a four-point move late in the third period to win 5-4 at 152 lbs. and the Rams trailed 34-22 Freshman Keyden Pollock won by fall, followed by a fall by junior Jake Vreugdenhil (Vroog-den-hill) to knot the score at 34-34. Cris Paniagua (Pan-ee-ah-gwah) accepted a forfeit for the final score of 40-34. The other Ram winners were senior Aaron Beaman by forfeit at 220 lbs. and sophomore Abe Yoder by fall at 120. The loss was the first in seven conference dual meets for Nevada.The win was the sixteenth in a row in conference action for the Rams dating back to the 2010-11 season.
Nevada bounced back with a 48-36 victory over Woodward-Granger in the second dual meet of the evening.
The final dual meet of the night saw Greene County win 54-18 over Woodward-Granger. The last match of the night went the maximum three overtimes with Beaman winning 4-2 over Brent Carlson in a match between seniors that both have more than 20 wins on the season. Beaman improved to 24-1 while Carlson fell to 21-7. Other winners for the Rams were Yoder, Jordan Challen, Whipple, Jacey Weitl, Scheuermann, Eischeid, Paniagua, and Rene’ Guzman (Gooz-mahn). Woodward-Granger winners were Colton Milosevich, Jimmy Harney, and Evan Boderman.
The two dual meet victories improved the Rams’ record this season to 15-4 while Nevada is 8-9 and the Hawks stand at 5-13. Thursday also marked Senior Recognition Night as it was the final home action of the season for the Rams.
