The Jefferson-Scranton School Board held two meetings last night.

The first meeting was a work session in Jefferson at the South Grade Building.  Jefferson-Scranton Superintendent Tim Christensen comments that the board heard reports from the science department in the district.  He says they looked at test scores and basically wanted to find out what the board could do to support the science department in a greater capacity.  Christensen explains a key benefit for why they have work session meetings.

“One of the best things I think is to get the teachers sitting in front of the school board members and then giving them an opportunity to interact.”

The second meeting was a joint board meeting with East Greene in Grand Junction.  Items discussed at that meeting were the two-year whole grade sharing contract between the two school districts and the reorganization vote on February 5th.

Christensen explains that they are beginning to get the facts out to the public about reorganization.  He states that they are starting with community organizations like Kiwanis and Lions Club with the intent to bring factual information to everyone so the public is well informed what all will be included with reorganization.  The four main points are providing the best education possible to the student while at the same time driving up enrollment numbers, there’s state funding that the schools can take advantage of and there is a tax break for property owners over the next three years.

Christensen expresses that its important for people to know the facts and to vote by February 5th.  Absentee voting is available now at the County Courthouse.  If you have more questions or need more information, contact the Jefferson-Scranton Superintendent’s office at 386-4168.
