Do you need help deciding what to do about your farm estate?  Greene County Extension and Outreach may be able to help.  On Tuesday, January 29th, Greene County Extension is partnering with Boone Extension to provide an estate planning workshop for farm families.

There will be a variety of topics covered during the 9:30am-4pm workshop in Grand Junction.  Some of the topics are understanding the language of estate planning, the use of business entities, gift, estate and inheritance taxes that are involved and calculating retirement costs.

Greene County Extension Coordinator Michael Cooley says that since land prices continue to increase, there are a lot of issues that people have about their farm properties.  He explains that the workshop will better help those individuals who are deciding what to do with their properties, if they are planning on selling it, passing it down to future generations and understanding all the legal and financial components that go along with it.

There will be two featured speakers at the event: Farm and Agribusiness Management Specialist for ISU Extension in central Iowa Kelvin Leibold and Farm and Agribusiness Management Specialist in northwest Iowa and lawyer Melissa O’Rourke.  Cooley points out that people in Greene County may be familiar with Kelvin Leibold.

“He at one point, not too many years ago, served Greene County and did several workshops here.  And anyone who’s been in one of Kelvin’s workshops knows that he is certainly a really vibrant presenter.”

Cooley expresses that space is limited for the workshop.  Registration deadline is Friday, January 25th.  The cost is $50 per person with lunch included.  The workshop will be a St. Brigid Parish Hall at 602 East Hager Avenue in Grand Junction.  For more information, contact the Greene County Extension Office at 515-386-2138.
