Perry residents will have the opportunity to voice their thoughts on the future of former police K-9 Dakota at next week’s meeting.

A public hearing has been set for the January 21st City Council meeting in regards to the “disposal of public property”.  City Administrator Butch Niebuhr says though that sounds cold, the dog is owned by the City and certain procedures must be followed before they can sell Dakota.

After K-9 officer Clay Leonard submitted his resignation to the Perry Police Department to take a job with the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office, the council decided to sell Dakota and keep the money on-hold to hopefully restart the K-9 program again in the future.

Niebuhr says so far it’s unclear where the dog will go but hopefully they’ll know soon.

Niebuhr says Dakota is a talented dog and the Perry Citizens Against Crime group and Police Chief Dan Brickner are looking for a suitable new home for her.

Monday’s meeting takes place at 6pm in the Clarion Room of the Security Bank Building.
