The Perry boys basketball team has won two straight games in Raccoon River Conference action as they get set to host Ballard tomorrow night in the annual coaches vs cancer classic.  It has been a thin bench this year for the Bluejays often times going only 2 or 3 deep.  The most consistent reserve player has been Zach Roberts.  The sophomore is averaging around 5 points per game and is hitting nearly 30 percent from 3 point land.  Roberts actually started a few games in early December and talks about the difference between a starter and a reserve.

“I always thought starting was more difficult than coming off the bench.  It seems like there is more pressure there.  There’s not much room for error.  It was a challenge but I enjoy providing the spark off the bench.”

We asked Roberts how he looks to get into the tempo and speed of the game.

“I am always looking for my shot right when I get in there.  The 3 point shot has been my best weapon so I want to get a shot off early to get in the flow.  If the shot is not there, I always look to try and find my teammate and get them involved.”

Roberts has been one of the more consistent shooters on the team this year.  He tells KDLS that the 3 point shot was something he discovered last year.

“It was something I really worked on last year when I was playing two quarters of jv and 2 quarters of freshmen ball.  I started to hit a few and that just built my confidence.  I spend a lot- of time shooting trying to improve my outside shot.  I have to admit it has become my favoriot part of the game.”

Roberts and the Bluejays will look to stay hot tomorrow night.  The Perry offense has averaged 65 points over its last 3 games..some 10 points higher than their season average.  Tomorrow night’s game will be aired on local radio KDLS with Shawn Kenney on the call.
