Greene County was a 70-57 high school boys’ basketball winner in Des Moines last night over the Saydel Eagles. The Heart of Iowa Activities Conference victory improved the Rams to 5-12 in the league and 7-13 overall while the Eagles fell to 1-18 overall and 1-16 in the conference. Saydel won their first game of the season, but has dropped 18 straight games since.

Senior Reed Ostrander had 31 points and 13 rebounds to lead Greene County. The points were a season high for him. Senior Tory Beger added 16 points and senior Justin Ostrander scored 12. Justior Alex Gustafson had 22 points for Saydel.

The Rams trailed 16-12 at the end of the first quarter, but pulled ahead 34-29 at the half. Greene County built a 54-42 lead after three quarters of play, but Saydel scored the first 11 points of the fourth quarter to make the score 54-53. The Rams withstood the run and eventually built the advantage back to double digits. The three-pointers were falling for both teams with Saydel making eight and the Rams seven.

Tuesday night’s action was heard on KG98, as will the Thursday night make-up girl/boy doubleheader from Alleman as the Greene County teams face North Polk to end the regular season. Our coverage starts at 5:45 p.m. with the girls’ game beginning at 6, and the boys to follow around 7:30 p.m.
