The final regular season basketball games of the season for the Greene County teams were a pair of makeup contests on Thursday night in Alleman vs. North Polk. The seventh ranked Comets defeated the Rams in the girls’ game 50-33 while the Rams won the boys’ contest by a 66-60 score. Both games were heard on KGRA at 98.9 FM.

North Polk used a 22-0 first half run to overcome a 9-4 deficit in the girls’ game and the Comets built a 32-11 halftime lead. The Rams climbed to within 11 points in the second half, but could get no closer. Twins Miranda Murphy and Megan Murphy had 14 and 10 points, respectively for the Comets, who went 16-2 in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference to win the league title outright. NP is 18-3 overall. Greene County fell to 11-10 overall and 10-8 in conference games. Senior Jennifer Kennedy had 20 points for the Rams and sophomore Kayla Mobley added 10.

The boys’ contest was a game of big runs. The Rams led 23-22 in the second quarter before the Comets reeled off 12 points in a row. The Rams scored the final six points of the first half and then scored the first 15 points of the third quarter for a run of 21 straight points. Greene County out scored North Polk 20-13 in the third quarter and led 51-39 heading into the final eight minutes. NP scored 21 points in the last quarter, but it wasn’t enough as the Rams improved to 8-13 overall and 6-12 in the conference. The Comets fell to 14-7 overall and 11-7 in the Heart of Iowa Conference. Justin Ostrander had 23 points with 16 by Landon Braun and 15 for Reed Ostrander as the Rams won for the first time in several years at Alleman. The Comets were led in scoring by senior Jacob Hadaway’s 19 points.

The Greene County girls play on Saturday night in the first round of Class 3A regional action in Sac City vs. East Sac County. Coverage on KG98 starts at 6:30 p.m. with tipoff at 7 p.m. The Greene County boys are done until Feb. 18 when they play Carroll at Carroll in 3A district action.
