Veterans can now receive a designation on their driver’s license to receive benefits.

A program that start on January 15th, enacted by Governor Terry Branstad has been slowly gaining recognition throughout the state.  However, there are several items that the public should know before you receive the designation.

Director of Veteran’s Affairs Commission for Greene County Tracie Perez says there are some guidelines that must be followed.  She says that honorably discharged veterans must bring a copy of their DD114 to her office in the courthouse.  Then, she will help you fill out a form that is quickly processed and verified so you can receive the designation status on your driver’s license.

Perez wanted to clear up some common confusion about when people can apply for the veteran’s designation.  She states that you can only get the designation during a driver’s license renewal or a replacement license is needed.  However, she stresses that the paperwork to apply for it can be done anytime before you renew your license.

“I will fill it out.  I keep a copy of it and I make sure that the Iowa Department of Transportation Office upstairs in the Treasurer’s Office has a copy.  So that when you come in, if you’ve lost your copy, we will have a copy of the already completed paperwork.  So it can be done prior to your renewal dates.”

Perez notes that 13 people have completed paperwork for the driver’s license designation and according to the 2010 US Census there are about 964 veterans in Greene County.  She says several establishments give veterans discounts everyday and there’s more during holidays like Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day.
