One Jefferson girl will participate in the Elks Lodge State Hoop Shoot contest this weekend.
Kara Reed of Jefferson qualified in the 12-13 girls division receiving a first place trophy. Reed was the champion at the local competition on January 5th and repeated as champion at the Northwest District contest on January 19th. Now she has her sites set for the state competition tomorrow in Des Moines at the AIB College of Business gymnasium.
Elks Lodge Northwest District Deputy Jerry Roberts explains what other levels there are after the state contest this weekend.
“If they win at state, then they can go on to regionals, which is a five-state regional. And the regional winners get to go onto the national contest. The national contest winners actually get their name inscribed in the Basketball Hall of Fame.”
After the local competition, only students that win each age and gender divisions will continue on with the contest.
Roberts points out that since the Elks Lodge is the sponsor of the National Hoop Shoot contest, the Jefferson Elks Lodge helps pay for Reed’s trip down to Des Moines. The Northwest Regionals will be held in Iowa City on March 16th.
