One of the things freshmen Republican State Senator Jake Chapman is working on this session has to do with automated traffic law enforcement systems.

Chapman and several other senators have come together and introduced two bills on the topic. The first eliminates the automated systems all together but Chapman says there is very little chance this bill will see any movement during this session, so they’ve also put together another bill that would redistribute the money cities make from these systems.  Instead of going to the city, Chapman says the monies would be donated to local non-profits.  He says if it’s really not about the money like the cities say, they should hopefully be willing to donate it to a good cause.

Still Chapman says realistically it’s possible Senate File 20 won’t progress very far either.  He says Senate Democrats didn’t let bills of this sort be debated last year and while they’re hopeful something will be done yet this session it’s possible it won’t.  Chapman says several states have started banning the automated systems after studies have been completed and he hopes Iowa is next on that list.
