Shallow groundwater levels across much of Iowa are currently at or near seasonal and historic lows.

State Climatologist Harry Hillaker says even though we had a good amount of precipitation last month, the winter doesn’t usually help drought conditions… but there is still hope because once the ground thaws later this month there is still plenty of time to moisten up the soil before the growing season begins.

So far this month, Perry has received one-tenth of an inch of precipitation.  Typically just over two inches falls during the month of March.

Jefferson has received three one-hundredths of an inch so far and Guthrie Center has no precipitation on record yet in March.  Both cities also usually get just over two inches throughout the month.
