The property tax debate at the state capital continues with Senate Democrats and Governor Terry Branstad having plans that differ greatly.

Currently, commercial property is taxed at 100 percent and District 10 Republican State Senator Jake Chapman says that can make it hard to compete for business.

Chapman of course says he’s in favor of Governor Branstad’s plan and thinks all businesses should be treated alike instead of having to develop separate classes to where different industries get different tax breaks.

He says one of the concerns is how are cities going to manage with a reduction in revenues if commercial property taxes are cut but Branstad’s proposal backfills those losses with state money and Chapman feels that’s the type of environment businesses are looking for.
