On Friday, March 8th, Jefferson Police Officers executed a search warrant for animal neglect at the home of Melissa Joy and Troy Upchurch at 409 North Olive Street in Jefferson.  A search warrant was issued for an animal complaint that was filed on February 24th.

Police Chief Dave Morlan says that an adult male and female Yellow Labrador dogs and 10 puppies were seized by officers for failing to supply the animals with necessary food and medical care for internal parasites.

Chief Morlan states that the animals were taken to Jefferson Veterinary Clinic for initial care.  The cost of the initial care was paid for by P.A.W.S.-a nonprofit pet adoption and rehabilitation organization.  PAWS then took the animals to a facility in a nearby county for further care and treatment.

Melissa Joy, 36 and Troy Upchurch, 35 are charged with a simple misdemeanor for animal neglect.  According to the Greene County Attorney’s Office, the fine varies from $65-$625 and a maximum of 30 days in jail.  A court hearing is pending at this time.
