Dallas County continues to grow in population at a rapid rate.

According to population estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau Dallas County is now the 14th fastest growing county in the nation, and the fastest growing in Iowa.

Dallas County grew 8.8% since the 2010 census, adding more than 5,300 residents and bringing the total population to nearly 72,000.

Dallas County Board of Supervisors Chairman Mark Hanson says the county continues to grow quicker than a lot of people realize, adding more than 30,000 people between the 2000 and 2010 census.

The growth has both positive and negative side effects.  Valuation in the county continues to increase which allows the County to continue to decrease the levy, though once the total population reaches 75,000 people, Dallas County will be required to have an additional courtroom.  Hanson says it’s a current issue and the board continues to explore all options.

The new Census Bureau estimates are based on administrative data for births and deaths and estimates of migration since the 2010 census.
