The Jefferson Fire Department, Jefferson Police Department and Alliant Energy responded to a natural gas leak at 124 North Wilson around 11am today.

Alliant Energy Spokesperson Justin Foss says a truck backed into a meter which broke a pipe, knocking off the meter and natural gas started blowing out.  He says they paged the fire and police departments to assist in evacuating people out of their buildings on the westside of the downtown square.

Foss says Alliant Energy had crews out to seal off the leak and within 20 minutes, the leak was stopped and people were allowed to re-enter their buildings.

Fire Sergeant Derrick Bauer was the officer on scene and says Alliant Energy was very quick to come out and seal off the leak and that they were the ones who gave the all clear.
