Adair County Extension Office wants to remind all Adair County 4-H’ers that the deadline to apply for local scholarships is approaching.

Applications for the Kelly Laughery 4-H Community Service Scholarships are due April 1 and Adair County 4-H’ers who will graduate from high school this year and who have been involved in service efforts are invited to apply.  Applicants can enroll in any type of post-secondary programs such as trade school, community college, or a four-year college.  The scholarships are awarded with funds from the recently established Kelly Laughery Endowment Fund along with dollars raised by the Adair County 4-H Youth Council and organizers plan to award up to 14 scholarships this year.

Adair County Extension 4-H Program Coordinator Donna Wallace says Laughery was very involved in service during her 4-H career, promoting youth involvement in service efforts while serving the community as an AmeriCorps member.  While engaged in volunteer work as a student at Iowa State University, a drunk driver cut her life short.  Anyone wishing to bolster the endowment fund can contact the Adair County Office to make a donation Wallace added.

Wallace says another scholarship being offered is the Rich and Deb Hall Leadership Scholarship with applications also due April 1.  Rich and Deb are offering a minimum of five scholarships to recognize youth who have demonstrated outstanding leadership qualities.  Applicants must have been an active member of the Adair County 4-H Youth Council for at least two years, and must be enrolled in a post-secondary, accredited college in the 2013 fall term.  Wallace points out scholarships are not limited to 2013 freshmen, but any student working toward an associate, bachelors, masters or doctoral degree.
