The Jefferson-Scranton School Board met last night in regular monthly session.

The Board approved August 21st will be the first day of the 2013-14 school year.  The rest of the calendar including the final school year was not decided at last night’s meeting.

One main item that was approved by the Board was the hiring of Kebecca Educational Services, Incorporated from Cedar Rapids to provide instructors and associates to teach third level behavior development special education students.  The cost of the program is $156,000 for a total of seven students.  It was recommended to pull students back into Jefferson-Scranton from Woodward-Granger where some are currently attending starting next year.

Other agenda items approved by the Board was the grounds and fertilizer contract with Raccoon Valley Lawn Care to continue its services at a cost of $15,500 and all shared athletic and fine arts programs with either Boone, Carroll or East Greene for next school year.

A budget presentation was made by Superintendent Tim Christensen.  The total spending authority amount was $12,125,000.  The total amount for expenditures was $11,473,418.  The property tax levy is based on a 2% allowable growth from the state legislature of $13.85.

 Finally, the Board set a public hearing for the 2014 school budget for April 10th at 5:15pm at the South Grade Building in Jefferson.
