During Severe Weather Awareness Week, several weather spotting training courses have been sponsored by the National Weather Service.

If you missed a training session, the Greene County Law Enforcement Center provides the public with a DVD with the information you need to be an educated storm spotter.

Jefferson Police Chief Dave Morlan says the public is invited to severe storm spotter training classes, but this is another way for people to learn more about becoming a storm spotter.

“Emergency responders have attended that training and its open to the public, so the public can attend it.  With budget cuts, they’re not coming around every year now.  But, the training is still available locally.  We do have a CD from the previous year’s training.  And that can be made available if someone wants to view it.”

Chief Morlan points out that the training is only meant to inform you about spotting severe storms.  He states that if someone calls in a storm, generally it has to be verified through an official entity, like the police or fire departments, before the sirens can be activated.

The National Weather Service holds storm spotter training webinars throughout the year as well.  More information about the webinars can be found on our website at Raccoonvalleyradio.com.

Jefferson’s severe storm spotter training will be offered next spring.
