As Severe Weather Awareness Week continues, today we focus on severe thunderstorms.

The National Weather Service issues severe thunderstorm warnings when storms are capable of producing winds of at least 58 miles per hour a hail at least 1 inch in diameter.

There are several risks involved with severe thunderstorms including lightning, straight-line winds and large hail.

All residents are encouraged to know the area around them so you know what to listen for when storms develop. Check the weather forecast before leaving to be outdoors or extended periods of time.  Stay indoors during storms, unplug unnecessary electronics and keep a radio near you to stay tuned to Raccoon Valley Radio for weather updates.
