Metal debris is the cause for a one vehicle accident on Tuesday in Greene County.

Greene County Sheriff Steve Haupert says Michael Thomas Kennedy of Jefferson was traveling west on Highway 30 when his 2010 Toyota Prius struck a large piece of metal sticking up at the Union Pacific Railroad track crossing by Highway 144 in Grand Junction.

Sheriff Haupert states that the metal debris broke off into the engine area of Kennedy’s vehicle causing him to lose control and lifted his Prius up and turned it onto its side .

Kennedy was evaluated at the scene by Grand Junction Fire and Rescue and was later transported to Greene County Medical Center for further treatment.  Kennedy was released later that day.

Later in the day, Union Pacific Railroad sent a repair crew out to fix the problem area on their property.

Kennedy’s vehicle is reported to be a total loss.
