A pair of Jefferson-Scranton graduates participated in collegiate track & field meets on Saturday and both did well. 2010 high school graduate Andy Carman is a redshirt sophomore thrower at the University of Iowa. He and his teammates were at the Jim Click Shootout in Tucson, AZ, an event hosted by the U. of Arizona. Carman threw a personal best 54 feet, 2/3-4 inches in the shot put and finished in seventh place. The Hawks finished second in the team race to Big 10 rival Ohio State. The Buckeyes had 176 points to 149 for Iowa, 104 from from Kansas State, and 69 for Arizona. In addition to those four teams, scattered athletes from Stanford, Texas, and other schools took part in Tucson, as did some unattached competitors.

Philip Heisterkamp, a 2009 J-S grad, and senior at Central College in Pella, ran on Saturday in St. Louis at the Washington University Select Meet. Heisterkamp and his teammates in the 4 x 400 meter relay finished second in 3:24.06 on a windy day in eastern Missouri. The Central men finished in second place in the team standings among eight squads.
