A reminder to Jefferson residents that different locations throughout the City will have their water mains flushed today and tomorrow.

Water Department Supervisor Thomas Schilling wants to remind residents that when flushings occur, you might experience low water pressure and the water may turn brown due to iron in the water lines, but it is safe to drink.  It is done twice a year with the second one taking place between October and November.

Schilling talks about why the city’s water mains are flushed every year.

“Turn the water over and get fresh water in the water mains and clean out possibly residue that builds up in the bottom of the water mains.”

He recommends that you don’t wash white clothes while the water mains are flushed.  The discoloration may stain the clothes.  If you encounter discoloration, call the water department for a special detergent before you dry your clothes.

If you have any questions, call City Hall at 386-3111 or the water department at 386-2611.
