It’s starting to finally look and feel like spring which means more people will be out and about on foot, and on two and four wheels.

That being said, this time of year it’s always nice to be reminded about safety precautions.

Perry Police Chief Dan Brickner says the most important thing is being alert and aware.

“They key first and formost is to be alert to your surroundings and that applies not only to drivers of cars and motorists but to bicyclists and pedestrians” says Brickner.  “Make sure that you see each other and know what you’re doing.”

Chief Brickner says defensive driving and riding can go a long way as well.

“Cars should always, always yield to bikes and pedestrians in the roadway no matter whether they’re jaywalking across the street in the middle of the block or crossing somewhere they shouldn’t, they should always yield to those folks. And obviously it’s just common sense or smarts that if you’re on a bike or on foot you want to avoid stepping out in front of cars and those kinds of things” says Brickner.

A lot of it comes down to common sense, but sharing the road and always looking both ways are two ways to help prevent accidents from happening.
