The West Central Valley Elementary School students, and para educator Patty Peasley, have been working to help save the earth and make money for the school.

They began their “Trash for Cash” program, which has kids save their “trash” items such as: chip bags, candy wrappers, juice packs and cookie wrappers.

Each day after lunch students sort through their lunches for items that can be saved and turned into cash. They then deposit these items into one of the collection boxes located in the lunchroom, hallway and office.

So far this year, Stuart Elementary School Principal Sharon Sloss says they have received a check for $500.

Peasley says, for Earth Day she took the 3rd grade students down to the locker where they keep the items and they helped her sort it, which gave them a better idea of what they can save to help the school raise money, while

providing them with a sense of responsibility.
