perry pdAs the spring season warms up, more bicyclists will take to the Raccoon River Valley Trail.  With that in mind, Perry Police Chief Dan Brickner says motorists should be more on the lookout for bicyclists on busy intersections.

Since the completion of the trail loops, Chief Brickner notes that where the trail crosses over vehicle intersections, people must take extra precaution.

One of the most important intersections is where the trail crosses Highway 141.  Chief Brickner believes that intersection will be the most troublesome.

“Speeds are obviously much higher there.  I know of one instance where there were some kids stopped, a semi driver was coming up and was concerned because it looked like they were going to pull out (and) didn’t know what to do so he stopped.  So the kids went out onto the road when he stopped and a car was coming along on the other side and just missed those kids at a pretty high speed.  You’ve got to be very aware of what’s going on.”

Having the trail finished for people to use is a great thing adds Brickner, but increased traffic on the trails means people must be more cognizant of their surroundings.
