dallas countyThe Dallas County Board of Supervisors have selected a location for new proposed county facilities and now it will be up to voters to decide later this summer.

Yesterday the board unanimously chose the east Adel site for the proposed administration and public safety facility.   It’s a process the Supervisors have been working on for seven years now as one of the nation’s fastest growing counties.

Board chairman Mark Hanson says they’ve looked at many different options both in and outside of Adel.

“In my view this is the best plan given all the information we’ve been provided over the last couple of years” says Hanson.

He says the chosen site is one that best honors the integrity of the county seat, while serving the people of the county.

“The east Adel site is actually in the geographic middle of the population, with the just tremendous growth in Waukee, West Des Moines, Clive and Urbandale.  That’s over fifty percent of the population of the county, and so the access point of the current proposed location is better” adds Hanson.

The new site would allow County offices such as the treasurer and auditor to be all in one central location rather than split among several buildings.  It is also the proposed site for a new jail that will have adequate space to handle the county’s prisoners and house the Sheriff’s Office.  The county will continue to maintain office buildings they own at 902 Court Street, 121 Ninth Street and 201 North Nile Kinnick Drive.

The Supervisors are expected to set a countywide referendum date by June 21st, which will likely bring the issue before voters sometime this summer.
