The Iowa Department of Natural Resources submitted their numbers of impaired waters to the
Environmental Protection Agency, one month ago for review, as required by the Clean Water Act.

In 2012, Guthrie County had three total impairments, with two of them labeled as a category 4
impairment and one being a category five impairment.

The EPA says that Iowa is proactive and reporting all instances which is the first step to improved water quality.

The state currently has 479 impaired bodies of water. The EPA notes that a body of water is
placed on this list when the pollutant levels prevent the lake, river or stream from acquiring it
fully beneficial uses.
