motorcyclistMay is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month and it’s important for both motor vehicles and motorcyclists to be safe on the road.

Jefferson Police Chief Dave Morlan urges both the motoring public and motorcyclists to be aware of each other and motorists need to take extra precaution due to the size of motorcycles.

“Allow an extra second or two reaction time for those.  The motorcyclists sometimes will not use their brakes and you might not see that brake light, they might use their gears to slowdown.  Be aware that they’re smaller, they’re easier to be in your blind spot, make sure you take that second look (and) expect them to be there and just be alert and aware for them.”

Chief Morlan also suggests for motorcyclists to wear a helmet for better protection.  He states that motorcyclists wear leather as a protection agent when riding on the road and for warmth when the temperatures get colder, especially at night.

During this month, Iowa recognizes motorcycle safety and by following these reminders, everyone can be safer on the road.
