First responders in Guthrie County are prepared to handle any dangerous situation they may face thanks to continued training and the help of other area departments.

Even though most first responder programs in the county are run on a volunteer basis, there are 2 paid Emergency Medical Services departments in Guthrie County, one in Panora and the other in Stuart.

Guthrie and Adair County Emergency Management Coordinator Bob Kempf says, they are required to undergo hazardous material training at least once every two years.

For any major incident, Kempf says the County is teamed up with the city of Council Bluffs Fire Department’s Hazmat team, who provides them with support either in-person, or via phone or email.

Kemp says, they also review the County’s hazardous materials plan on a yearly basis.

This is all just a part of keeping the citizens and residents of Guthrie County safe, if danger ever strikes.
