Jake-ChapmanAnother piece of legislation co-sponsored by freshmen Senator Jake Chapman failed to make it through this session.

The Republican from Adel has always campaigned in favor of voter identification and eliminating election fraud.  The amendment proposed last week requires voters to provide proof of identity to a precinct election official before being allowed to vote but also allows options.  Chapman says voters would also be allowed to have someone with a photo ID attest to their identity or they could vote with a provisional ballot that states it won’t count until an acceptable form of identification is presented.

In his weekly newsletter, Chapman says any amount of voter fraud is unacceptable as it disenfranchises everyone’s vote.  He says the voting process in Iowa is too important to not have a voter ID measure in place and such legislation is a common sense solution to the problem.

The bill was rejected along party lines.
