After 11 years as East Greene School District Superintendent, Mike Harter will be retiring.

His teaching career began in Mission, South Dakota.  Eventually he came back to Iowa where he earned his superintendent certificate at the University of Northern Iowa and received his first administrative position at Russell School District.  Since 2002, Harter has been the superintendent at East Greene.

While declining enrollment has been the biggest issue facing East Greene, Harter says the relationship with Jefferson-Scranton School District has been strong and allows his students to enjoy opportunities that they could no longer offer.

He appreciates the support he’s received as superintendent and the relationships he’s had.

“I’ve had some much support (with) the (School) Board members who have been here, the current Board and the past Board members; people I’ve worked with business managers, Board secretaries and the community and the vote for reorganization; a lot of people to thank there.  And one person I’ll pick out and mention by name is Tim Christensen.  Working with him has been great and being able to get through this process, working together.”

After retirement, Harter plans to move back to Fairbank, Iowa where he taught for a beirf time and his wife still teaches at.  He also wants to spend more time with his grandchildren and go fishing with them, play some golf and do more officiating.
