Today we celebrate Memorial Day and it’s a big day for camping and recreational activities around the county. On this unofficial opening weekend for campgrounds across the area, safety is of high importance for campers.

Guthrie County Conservation Director Joe Hanner says that safety is important anytime you have this many people out on the campgrounds, “the biggest safety tip I can give anyone at anytime is just to use good common sense when you’re in the outdoors.”

There will plenty of activities to go out and enjoy, including fishing, hunting, kayaking and canoeing.  Hanner says it is important to have an arsenal of safety items available, “plan accordingly, plan ahead and then execute your plan.”

Hanner says that one of the most important things you can do is to let people know where you’re going to be and when you plan on being back.
