With weather cancelling the second annual Iowa Bike Festival in Jefferson on Saturday, several events still pedaled on.

A majority of the outdoor events were postponed, but a few of the events were still held indoors.  Co-organizer Chuck Offenburger with Cyclists of Greene says the art show opened Friday night at All Abilities Cycles and it will remain open throughout June.  He points out that there were original, bicycle-theme art from 25 artists from 11 states.

Another highlight was a special guest speaker at the Greene County Historical Museum.  Surrounded by bicycle history and exhibits, 60 people gathered to hear Mark Wyatt, executive director of the Iowa Bicycle Coalition and Al Brody from Colorado Springs share their inspirational stories about bicycling and the growing tourism in the state.

Offenburger says he was disappointed that weather caused the festival to be postponed, especially since several people traveled to town on Friday night.  However, his number one concern was the public’s safety.

“So we already had some people in town overnight, camping or staying with friends here in Jefferson and we feel bad about for some of those who made long trips to get here, but on the other hand, it was just too dangerous.  The weather was really rough.  So it became a pretty easy decision, it was just too dangerous to have people thinking about standing outside and the wind was up and it was raining hard of course.”

Offenburger states they are currently rescheduling the event for another date and parts of the festival will have to change, but people can still expect to have a fun time.
