droughtIt looks like we may finally get some much needed sunshine and a day or two without rain this week and it couldn’t come at a more needed time.

Several Iowa waterways are above flood level, including many areas along the Raccoon River Basin.

According to the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers the North Raccoon River is currently more than 3.5 feet above flood stage, increasing by more than a foot in the past 24 hours alone.

Other local areas above flood stage include the Middle Raccoon River near Bayard which is over flood stage by almost 4.5 feet and the Buttrick Creek near Grand Junction is flooded by more than a foot.

All three of our area weather reporting stations have received above normal amounts of precipitation this month.

Perry has recorded almost 8 inches of rain in May, Guthrie Center received more than 7 inches and Jefferson has had more than twice its normal monthly precipitation amount, recording more than 9 inches of rain.
