0606131156aThe kids summer reading program is in full swing at the Jefferson Public Library.

Children’s Librarian Terri Clark says their program is set up so that anyone from four year-olds to fifth graders can join in anytime.  While other libraries have set times for all the children to come together for storytimes specifically for a summer reading program, Clark says they have multiple activities for kids to be involved while reading on their own.

Some of the activities are weekly movies throughout June, finding a hidden gnome and other hidden items around the children’s department and a different weekly craft all tailored to the theme of “Dig Into Reading”.  There is also a worm race to track each child’s reading progress.

At the end of the program in July, Clark notes that anyone who completes all the tasks in their activity booklets and reads at least 15 books, will be put on the Gnome Hollow Wall of Honor.  She describes how the wall will be displayed.

“Now this is going to be really fun.  We’re going to superimpose the picture of their heads on gnome bodies and they will be apart of the scenery for Gnome Hollow.  We’ve done this kind of thing before and the kids really love this, it’s a lot of fun.”

The program continues until the final party on July 29th when the Blank Park Zoo brings animals to the library for the kids to enjoy and be rewarded for participating in the program.  Call the children’s department at the Jefferson Library at 386-4415.
