The topsy-turvy softball season in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference continued on Wednesday night. Greene County was upset at lower division Gilbert 6-4, which looked like it would end the Rams hopes of at least tying for the conference title. That is not the case however, as PCM (Monroe) won over North Polk in Alleman by a 2-1 final, giving the Rams one final shot at a share of the league crown. NP and PCM are done with conference games and both finished 13-5, while Greene County is 12-5 with a make up contest around 4 p.m. Saturday, July 6 in Jefferson vs. Saydel (Des Moines). A win by the Rams would mean a three-way title for the HOIAC title. The Rams and PCM shared the crown in 2012. Saydel has six conference losses after falling in extra innings to Colfax-Mingo on Wednesday night. Had the Eagles pulled out a win vs. the Tigerhawks, they wood have been playing for a share of the title as well.
The Saturday afternoon game between Greene County and Saydel will be broadcast on KG98 with pregame at approximately 3:45 p.m. The Rams are 23-9 overall and host non-conference opponent South Central Calhoun (Lake City) (0-19) on July 5 at the City diamond on East Lincolnway around 7:30 p.m. The Rams will host SCC again on July 9 at 7 p.m. in the opening round of Class 3A Region 2 softball and the Tuesday contest can be heard on KG98.
